Jim Fels is a trial attorney with over 28 years practice experience from 1974 to 2002. His career included representation of over 3000 injured plaintiffs and those who were defendants in personal injury lawsuits. He is one of the founding partners of The Mediation Group LLC.
Jim is now involved full-time in conducting mediations, arbitrations and serving as chairman of medical review panels.
Jim has worked as a certified mediator since 1993 and has been involved in over 5000 mediations. The primary focus of Jim’s mediation and arbitration work is personal injury cases, real estate claims and business, construction and commercial litigation disputes. Jim is a member of The American College of Civil Trial Mediators (ACCTM).
Jim began as an associate attorney with the law firm of Wilson & Tabor where he worked on personal injury plaintiff’s cases and represented defendants insured by Home Insurance. He also obtained his private pilot’s license while with the firm and worked on aviation defense cases for Ohio Casualty Insurance Company.
Later as a founder and 16 year partner in the law firm of Tabor, Fels & Tabor, Jim was involved in training associate lawyers to handle plaintiff’s personal injury claims and served as lead trial counsel in many jury trials of medical malpractice, product liability and other personal injury actions. According to Jim, his legal training has combined well with the people exposure and knowledge he gained from a variety of jobs during high school, college and law school. His first job was as a paperboy for the Indianapolis Star. During high school at North Central in Indianapolis, he played football and was #2 man on the Marion County Championship tennis team.
As a pre-law/business major at Butler University, Jim paid for his education by combining his tennis scholarship with employment at the Hugh J. Baker Machinery & Foundry Co., driving a truck delivering Canada Dry, working two years at Ford Motor Company and serving as House Manager at his college fraternity.
Jim served six years in the United States Army and Indiana National Guard as a military policeman. He returned from the service and began work in real estate with Walker & Partlow Realtors before becoming a Closing Officer with Pioneer Title Corporation.
In 1970 Jim began his legal training at Indiana University-Indianapolis Law School. Attending evening classes he worked weekdays as a clerk for Wilson & Tabor and weekends as a bartender (“one of my life’s most enlightening psychological encounters with people”). Jim graduated magna cum laude from IU and embarked on his legal career in 1974.
He is a member of the Indiana and Indianapolis Bar Associations and has been a member of the Indiana and American Trial Lawyers Associations and the Lawyer Pilots Bar Association. He is a Life Registered member of Who’s Who and is listed in Who’s Who in American Law.
Jim has again been recognized as an Indiana Super Lawyer each year since 2008 and has been listed for over ten years in The Best Lawyers in America.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jim has lived in Indianapolis since age 7. He is married to the former Nancy Dugan. They met in fourth grade. Jim and Nancy have three boys who are all Indiana University graduates. Jim coached all the boys in CYO basketball and in Little League, including serving as President of Haverford Little League.
Jim was a Godfather with St. Mary’s Child Center for 5 years. During their leisure time, Jim and Nancy enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, golf, Pacers, Butler and Colts games and activities at Highland Golf & Country Club where Jim has served as President and chairman of the Board. Nancy works as an interior decorator and was a contributor to the original décor of The Mediation Group offices. Jim and Nancy also enjoy vacationing in the winter at their condominium at Siesta Key Beach, Florida.
